A Grand Rapids-area teenager was killed in a traffic accident in January. According to police, he was exchanging text messages with his girlfriend just moments before.

Interviews and cell phone records suggest the teen, 18, was texting just before the accident occurred, said Steve Austin, of the Ottawa County Sherriff Dept.

The teen died when his vehicle swerved into oncoming traffic on a curve and collided with a pickup truck.

Currently, a proposal to ban texting while driving is in the state legislature. 19 states and the District of Columbia ban texting by all drivers, with another nine states prohibiting it for young drivers, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
